{"id":7241,"date":"2012-05-02T05:48:38","date_gmt":"2012-05-02T05:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.houstoncriminaltriallawyer.net\/?p=7241"},"modified":"2021-05-02T13:15:07","modified_gmt":"2021-05-02T13:15:07","slug":"houston-juvenile-defense-attorney-jim-sullivan-supports-the-public-defenders-office-in-representing-indigent-juveniles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.houstoncriminaltriallawyer.net\/houston-juvenile-defense-attorney-jim-sullivan-supports-the-public-defenders-office-in-representing-indigent-juveniles\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston Juvenile Defense Attorney Jim Sullivan Supports the Public Defenders Office in Representing Indigent Juveniles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/g.co\/kgs\/TDi1JH\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.houstoncriminaltriallawyer.netwp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Harris-County-Juvenile-Justice-Center-300x223.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.houstoncriminaltriallawyer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Harris-County-Juvenile-Justice-Center-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/www.houstoncriminaltriallawyer.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Harris-County-Juvenile-Justice-Center.png 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Houston Board Certified Juvenile Attorney Jim Sullivan supports the Public Defenders Office in representing indigent juveniles in Harris County in all three juvenile district courts.\u00a0 Currently, the PDO operates in only two of the three juvenile courts–313th and 315th district courts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Juveniles are our future and deserve the best representation available.\u00a0 If a juvenile does not feel he received a fair shake in the juvenile system, he may grow disillusioned with the justice system and graduate to the adult criminal system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Houston Chronicle published an article yesterday detailing the cronyism in the local system of court-appointed attorneys in an article entitled “<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/kilday-hart\/article\/Hart-A-public-defender-needs-no-cronies-3518838.php\">A public defender needs no cronies<\/a>” by Patricia Kilday Hart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to veteran and highly regarded defense attorney George Secrest, who sits on the board overseeing the Public Defenders’ Office, the current system is rife with cronyism.\u00a0 To keep receiving court appointments, attorneys feel pressure to move cases expeditiously.\u00a0 Demanding a trial gums up the criminal justice machine.\u00a0 Judges like attorneys who help them get cases off their\u00a0dockets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">“You need to flip your cases,” Secrest told Hart. Otherwise, “the judges will stop giving you\u00a0appointments.”<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Houston Juvenile Lawyer Jim Sullivan believes that the representation of the poor and indigent is a noble calling, that attorneys with the heart to represent the poor are doing it for the common good and not to enrich themselves. Sullivan firmly believes that the poor deserve the same level of representation as the wealthy but seldom receive it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This Houston Chronicle article points out that a former chairman of the local Republican Party received $372,000 in legal fees from court-appointed cases in 2011.\u00a0 This is 3 times the amount of the average experienced public defender and is almost the same salary as the President of the United States who receives $400,000!<a class=\"zemanta-pixie-a\" title=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zemanta.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/zemified_e.png?x-id=7926b5d3-71cb-4f02-a871-4aed23fa8eca\" alt=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Houston Board Certified Juvenile Attorney Jim Sullivan supports the Public Defenders Office in representing indigent juveniles in Harris County in all three juvenile district courts.\u00a0 Currently, the PDO operates in only two of the three juvenile courts–313th and 315th district courts.
